Citizens for Protecting Our Northern Waterways

About Us

We are a grassroots coalition of northern citizens, Indigenous representatives, business volunteers, and partners working together to protect Manitoba’s pristine lakes and rivers from the devastating spread of zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species (AIS). Our mission is simple: inform, act, and protect. By raising awareness, sharing resources, and supporting prevention programs, we’re helping keep our northern waterways safe for future generations.

Our Story

Although initiated in 2018, our coalition expanded in 2020 when we  became incorporated as a non-profit in Manitoba to address the growing threat of zebra mussels to our northern waterways. With increased boat traffic from the south and the increased presence of zebra mussels and other AIS in Manitoba waterways, there was an urgent need for northern action.

Since then, we've focused on community outreach and awareness and collaboration. We utilize our website and use Social Media to connect the public and businesses to prevention resources, government inspection schedules, and work with northern communities to spread awareness.

By working collaboratively with volunteers, local businesses, and provincial partners, we continue to spread awareness and support efforts to keep our lakes clean, safe, and  AIS free.

Our Vision

01

Protect Northern Waterways

Our top priority is safeguarding the lakes and rivers of Northern Manitoba from AIS—especially zebra mussels. These tiny invaders pose a serious risk to aquatic ecosystems, infrastructure, and recreation. We aim to reduce the spread through prevention, early detection, and ongoing public education. Every clean boat, watercraft or water related equipment and informed visitor makes a difference.

02

Educate & Inform

Knowledge is a powerful tool in the fight against AIS. We work to ensure that residents, travellers, lodges, and recreational users have access to up-to-date, easy-to-understand information. Whether through signage at boat launches, educational materials, or digital outreach on our website and social media, we make learning about how to Clean, Drain, Dry your watercraft and associated gear simple and accessible for everyone.

03

Strengthen Partnerships

We believe that collaboration leads to stronger protection. That’s why we work closely with local and provincial governments, cottager associations, local lodges, and other northern communities. By improving communication and coordinating protection efforts, we help make AIS prevention more effective and consistent across the region.

04

Grow Support & Involvement

Our work depends on the support of passionate individuals, local businesses, and funding partners. We seek out grant opportunities, accept donations, and welcome volunteers to help us grow our impact. From participating at community events to sharing resources, everyone has a role to play in protecting our waters—now and for the future.
